One of my lecturers (a Manufacturing professor) also once told
us that he once witnessed a solar eclipse..... using a full
welder's helmet. 
He got a lot of weird looks for that, but the bottom line is, it
worked.
it does.. The Science Centre handed out viewing filters which
basically blocked out almost all light.. i ripped mine apart and
used it as a camera lens filter for to take the pictures
